Introduction
| The earth's moon has been fascinating civilizations since the
beginning of time. In ancient times people believed that the
moon was a powerful god or goddess. The Romans called their
moon goddess Diana. In Greece, the moon goddess was Selene.
More recently, some American Indian tribes believed that the sun and
moon were siblings, brother and sister gods. There are stories and
legends that also attempt to explain the changing shapes and shadows
of the moon's surface. One legend explaining the surface
of the moon tells a story about a "man in the moon" who was sent
there to serve a prison term for stealing.
Today we know the causes for the change in the moon's shape
(phases) as the "moonth" progresses. These changes occur
because the relative positioning of the moon, Earth, and the sun.
On occasion a special event occurs when the moon, earth, and the sun
are perfectly in alignment. This is called an eclipse.
There are two types of eclipses, lunar and solar.
